Healthy Habits Series: 5 Tips For Cleaning Fun

Cleaning + fun aren’t two words you generally see put together. As professional cleaners, we’re here to share a few tips that will actually make your cleaning routine an enjoyable experience, one you may even want to repeat!

In today’s era of technology, it’s easy to combine cleaning with doing something else; the perfect multi-tasking task.  Below are a few of the ways we temper the tedium while also doing those much-needed house cleaning chores.

1.    Music:

This is an absolute must-have.  Put on your favourite playlist and clean to the rhythm of the blues, jazz, country or whatever your favourite genre happens to be.  Most hit songs are about 3-4 minutes long, so you can play a game with yourself - your dusting goal could be 3 hit songs.  And since songs generally have a rhythm, you may find yourself speeding up or slowing down depending on what’s playing.  Throw in a few good moves and have yourself a little dance party!

2.    Room by Room:

We find that completing one room before going onto the next provides us with a series of accomplishments that make cleaning a much more rewarding venture.  For example, once the bedroom has been dusted, bed made and floors washed, I turn on a bedside lamp to give the room a warm and welcoming ambience.  That way when I do my final walk-through to admire my work (and check for forgotten cleaning products/tools) I have double the pleasure of seeing it in all its’ organized cleanliness once again.  It’s also a good way to fit some cleaning in when you don’t have time to do the entire house - at least the rooms you clean are perfectly completed.

3.    Work the Workout:

Cleaning burns calories, just ask anyone who cleans professionally.  So, skip the workout today and wear an activity tracker while cleaning the house.  Such a simple little gadget, but being able to track calories, steps and your heart rate is a proven motivator.  Cleaning the bathroom can easily burn 100 calories and I know I work up a sweat whenever I have to vacuum.  Combine that with the bending and straightening involved in changing your bedding and you can get that same sense of accomplishment and rush of endorphins that you would have from hitting the gym.  Set a goal when you start and you’ll be inspired to take on a few extra cleaning chores just so your activity tracker says “You’ve achieved your daily goal!”

4.    Change it Up:

It doesn’t matter how much we love the print Mom and Dad brought back from Africa, sometimes we crave a different view while eating dinner.  You can use your cleaning time to dust the artwork on your walls, and maybe move it to a different place for a nice change.  Rearranging artwork and furniture will give your home an entirely new and exciting feel, and at the same time you’ll be inspired to dust, vacuum and clean underneath those items that rarely get moved.

5.    Talk Time:

Organize a talk time/cleaning date with a friend.  Technology to the rescue once again - put on your headphones and you’re hands-free to go about your cleaning duties like never before.  The time will fly by and you’ll suddenly realize your house is spotless and the thing you most remember is the fun and laughter you shared with one of your favourite people while doing it.  And if you were really quick, you can each sit back on your comfy couch or out in the beautiful Okanagan sunshine and indulge in a glass of wine while you pay homage to your sparkling clean rooms.

I hope these tips will inspire you to do some healthful cleaning in your home between visits by your regular house cleaning service.  Sometimes it’s tempting to do only the necessities such as dishes and sweeping and that’s fine too, but if you’d like to stay on top of things yourself, have fun doing it!
